March Week 3: RESPECT – Building Respect for People, Places & Property

Respect Is More Than Just a Word—It’s an Action

"Respect a man, and he will do all the more." – John Wooden

At Canadian Black Belt Academy Tottenham, we emphasize that respect goes beyond how we treat people—it also includes how we treat ourselves, our environment, and the belongings of others. As the #1 ranked Karate school for kids, adults, and families in Tottenham, Alliston, Beeton, and Simcoe County, we help students develop self-discipline and responsibility through martial arts training.

Respect means taking care of the things and people around us. Do you throw your training gear on the floor, or do you fold it neatly? Do you leave a mess for someone else to clean up, or do you take responsibility for your surroundings?

In our kids and adult Karate classes in Tottenham, we teach that small choices define who we are. By respecting our dojo, teammates, and environment, we develop the leadership qualities that make great martial artists and responsible individuals.

Why Respect for People & Property Matters

Respect isn’t just about how we treat instructors or training partners—it’s about how we treat everything around us. Here’s how we apply respect inside and outside the dojo:

Respecting Others – Speaking with kindness, treating people fairly, and following rules.

Respecting Yourself – Taking care of your health, practicing self-discipline, and believing in your potential.

Respecting the Dojo – Keeping your uniform clean, listening to instructors, and helping classmates improve.

Respecting Property & the Environment – Taking care of personal belongings, public spaces, and the world around us.

Think about your daily habits. Have you ever slammed a door without thinking? That could be considered disrespecting someone’s property. Have you ever refused to share with a friend? That shows a lack of respect for the people around you.

Respect starts with awareness—when we think before we act, we show we care.

Respect in Action: Everyday Examples

At Canadian Black Belt Academy Tottenham, we believe that respect is something you show through your actions. Here are some examples:

🥋 In the Dojo – Keeping the mats clean, listening to instructors, and helping newer students learn.

🏠 At Home – Cleaning up after yourself, speaking politely to family members, and being considerate.

🌎 In Public Places – Throwing trash in the bin, respecting community areas, and following public rules.

🏫 At School – Taking care of supplies, helping classmates, and treating teachers with kindness.

When we practice respect, we gain the trust of others, become better leaders, and create a positive environment for everyone.

Ask Your Child:

  1. Have you ever slammed a door? Did you think about how that could be disrespectful?
  2. Are you willing to share your toys or snacks with someone else?
  3. If your friends started damaging public property, would you stop them or join in?
